Mario Andretti Urges Marco To Make F1 Switch
23 12 2007Racing legend Mario Andretti has urged his grandson Marco Andretti to make a switch to Formula One. Mario reckons that Marco has to do it to progress his career in a positive direction.
Marco Andretti currently races for his father’s IndyCar Series race team. He tested twice for the Honda F1 Team in the winter off-season 2006/2007 but has not been asked back to test for any team since.
Marco himself has previously commented on moving across to F1, and Mario reckons that the 20 year old seriously needs to be thinking about the switch, even hinting that moving to Euro race series’ would help him in his quest.
“He needs to be in F1,” Andretti told Autoweek magazine.
“That’s where he needs to be.
“He has the talent.
“Marco needs to step up and let people know what are his desires.
“I know that’s where he wants to be, and I know he can do it.”

Grandpa should step away and let MArco breath his own air in his own space. Grandpa is retired and is clueless to what F1 is today, when he was driving there were only 3 TV stations and the cars went only 160 mph. (Some cars crashed, some just fizzled.) Marco is barely an adult and when you look at him you can see the sadness in his eyes, as if he was never allowed to take a step on his own. Marco might want to fly jet planes or be a partatrooper, this so-called American family sport has gone awrye. Honda girls in cages, party’s with the girls next door, all for adult entertainment….sickening! Marco is a genuine individual but he has to bear the brunt of his entire very large extended families misfortunes. Certainly Grandpa was a legend in his time, but it was his- not Marcos time. A young boy who needs time with real professionals like Lewis Hamilton, perhaps. Lewis is a gentleman and a sportsman with real F1 ethics. The real deal.
Marco is truly a talent. I agree with his grandfather that he should make the move now. Indycar racing from a career ending point of view is “much” more dangerous than F1 today. Obviously he would have to get up to speed on the technical aspects of the cars but he is a ready and seasoned talent. Also, despite what Neon mentioned about Granpa Andretti, maybe the speeds of the cars are not nearly as fast, however the danger of being killed during Mario’s era more than makes up for any differences in speed, technical sophistication or car controls. Comparing Hamilton to Marco, I think with some seasoning Marco could be right there, no question
