Drivers Pour Fuel On Fire Over Strike Action

20 06 2008

Formula One could be set to see its first drivers strike over the new costs of the Super Licence.

Many drivers are outraged at the price hikes, which will see the leading drivers havign to pay 200,000Euro + per year.  Their system is based on how many points you score to how much you have to pay.

Fernando Alonso, head of the GPDA was first to announce his displeasure at the ridiculous price increases.

“It is a very serious matter, and we were talking about (the) superlicence price in the last couple of GPDA meetings. It has to be agreed between us, and we all agree that it is not fair that from one year to the next it (the cost) increases 500-600 percent.

“It is something we need to look at, and I don’t know what will be the solution and what will be our effort, but if there is a strike in Silverstone then maybe it is one possibility.”

Robert Kubica, the Polish starlet agreed with Alonso:

“I agree with what Fernando said about the cost of a superlicence which has increased quite a lot over the last year.  It is quite a lot of money especially if you are scoring points, like Lewis did last year in your first year in Formula One.”

Kimi Raikkonen also agreed, in his usual dour way!

“For sure I support the thing,” he said

A drivers strike?  The FIA is really taking things too far, they need to watch themselves because a Bernie Ecclestone breakaway is not far off, things like this won’t help at all.  F1Fanatics completly supprots the drivers in their displeasure over these stupid new costing rules!

Notice Hamilton has come out and said he wouldn’t strike if the GPDA did. ”I am here to race, to do my job for the team” quickly translates to “I’ll gladly take free points if everyone else is standing up to the FIA.”

I think his refusal to join the GPDA and his unwillingness to stand up for anyone but himself proves his character.
