Mexico Wants F1 Again From 2010

10 08 2008

Mexico have announced they are going to do everything within their power to get a Formula One race from the 2010 Season onwards.

The Central American country has hosted races in the past, some time ago, but fell out of favour and hasn’t seen the F1 circus for some time. They host major events like A1GP and WTCC but their circuits are not quite up to F1 standards.

Circuits at Puebla, Cancun, Tijuana and possibly Mexico City are vying to be the F1 track, but as aforementioned are not up to F1 standard and need significant investment.

“Those changes will be made by 2010 and, if it happens, (Mexico will) have to work hard to have a proper track. Even so, we must wait for Bernie Ecclestone’s decision to include Mexico,” Jose Abed is quoted as saying by Sportsya.

“We are able to do it [bring F1 to Mexico], because the authorities are willing to make the relevant investments and everyone has a chance. We just have to afford it since a Formula One track is worth more than $50 million,”

This would be a superb idea to get back some of the countries that hosted F1 in the past. The only thing is the tracks are in very poor condition as WTCC and A1GP struggle with some of the crumbling tarmac. However saying that the support from the locals and the design of some of the tracks provide great racing. So I don’t see any reason why Mexico couldn’t host the GP, I wish them the best because I really hate these new super tracks that only benefit the invited only guest and provide dull racing. Old skool tracks like this is a rare thing and that’s why WTCC and A1GP use them.

Mexico will be a great host! Mexican fans are second to none. Hopefully the can upgrade the track(s) without losing any of the original charm or diversity. Good luck Mexico, I hope you get it!!

I also vote to bring back F1 back to Mexico. It will fill the void after Champ Car folded and joined the IRL. But not only F1 should come back. We like to see Indy Car come for the 1st time as well as MotoGP.
