Kubica Signs New Deal; Heidfeld Told To Improve

27 08 2008

Paddock sources close to the BMW Sauber F1 Team have said that Polish driver Robert Kubica has signed a new 1 year contract extension with the team.

The bosses wanted him to sign for another 3 years, but Kubica wants to be a free agent in 2010 with a possible move to Ferrari or McLaren on the cards.

Meanwhile, Nick Heidfeld has been told to improve his form.

The German driver has had a tortuous season, completly in the shade of Kubica who is wranging the BMW Sauber F1.08 around the tracks to the best of its ability and even beyond its means. Meanwhile Heidfeld struggles to get out of Q2 and score points.

Dr. Mario Theissen said: “I am not sure [About Heidfeld's future with BMW]. What we saw in Valencia was mixed again and, in the second run in qualifying two, it was almost a perfect lap. He was struggling before in two specific areas of the track and in that one lap he was able to do that very cleanly.

“I hope it gives him the confidence to be strong again in the races, he has been strong, I think he will be back on track.”

When asked if the qualifying factor was going to play a key factor in his team’s driver decision for 2009, Theissen said: “It has to, because if you look what you can do from P10, it is limited.”
