It has emerged today that Lucas di Grassi is being lined up by the Renault F1 Team to replace Nelson Piquet Jr next season as the French team look to drop the Brazilian rookie.
Piquet, in his first season of F1, has been largely poor and only had one decent finish, a 2nd place at Germany. He is desperately trying to keep his seat but errors such as the one he made in Singapore are not helping.
Meanwhile, Di Grassi has looked fine in testing, showing good pace and a favourable attitude towards the team.
An insider on the Renault team informed us that Flavio Briatore has had meetings with the Scuderia Toro Rosso team looking to offload Nelson Piquet onto them. STR aren’t interested unless there is a big incentive, and they may well use their engines in 2009 as part of the deal.
