Force India Retain Sutil And Liuzzi For 2010

27 11 2009

Force India have announced they will be retaining the services of Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi as drivers for the forthcoming 2010 season.

The team based at Silverstone will keep the drivers they finished 2009 with.

While Adrian Sutil has now been with the same team since it was running under the Spyker moniker, the race seat is good news for former tester Liuzzi who only got a few races when Giancarlo Fisichella parted ways with Force India for Ferrari.

“We are very pleased to retain the services of both Adrian and Tonio for another season,” said team boss Vijay Mallya.

“We have always maintained that consistency is key at this stage in the team’s development and for the first time in many years we will have the continuity of not only the same drivers, but also the same engine and senior management.

“With this stability now in place I truly believe we have an excellent platform to build on and move forward on our strong 2009 performance. I am sure we have one of the most dynamic line-ups on the grid and I hope this will stand us in good stead in what we all hope will be a transitional year for the team.”

Force India had some really strong performances in 2009, and will be looking to maintain their strength into the new year.

Klien Confident Sauber Will Be On 2010 Grid

25 11 2009

Christian Klien has declared his confidence that a reformaed Sauber/Qadbak investment team will be on the Bahrain Grand Prix’s grid for the start of the 2010 season.

The Austrian is quietly confident that he will be driving for the new entity, which despite Toyota’s withdrawl from F1 has not been guaranteed a grid spot.  Klien mentioned that he would have had a seat with BMW had they remained in the sport for the forthcoming season.

“Had BMW Sauber signed in for 2010 I would most likely have been guaranteed a race seat,” he told his official website.

“As mentioned before, the successor has no official entry for 2010 yet. But everyone in Hinwil is working flat out on next year’s race car.

“Having said that it seems clear that all decisions such as sponsorship deals and driver line-up cannot be announced before that matter is resolved. I am positive that the traditional Sauber team from Hinwil will be on the grid in Bahrain in 2010.”

Kobayashi Targets Lotus, As New Boss Gascoyne Looks For Experience

6 11 2009

Kamui Kobayashi has stated he is now targetting getting a contract with one of the four new F1 teams, preferably with the Lotus Grand Prix team.

Kobayashi was a Toyota test driver, who completed the last 2 races for the Japanese outfit who pulled out of F1 earlier this week.  Kobayashi, who admits he has no budget for next season and is concerned about going back to work in his father’s Sushi restaurant, has been seen as a potential new world champion after valiant performances.

“Obviously, my place at Toyota is lost,” the 23-year-old is quoted as saying.

“I was close to signing a contract for 2010, but there are four new teams and still options,” Kobayashi added. “If I could choose a team I would choose Lotus.”

However, Mike Gascoyne who is the new head of technical design at Lotus, and who has already landed himself in hot water and an argument with Force India about whether he has put their 2009 wing on the new 2010 Lotus, reckons he wants some experienced drivers.

“We are looking for two drivers with experience,” he told Autosport.com

“We are not looking for pay drivers or new drivers. We think that is very important for the team.”

Gascoyne also confirmed the rumours that Jarno Trulli is at the top of the wanted list for the team. “He [Trulli] is one of the guys we would like to have. Jarno has, over one lap, always been sensational. That is even more important in a new team because you need to know where you are on a Saturday. Jarno can always give you that.”

Jacques Villeneuve and Christian Klien have also held talks with Lotus over a potential future drive.

Petrov & de La Rosa To Campos For 2010 While Klien Eyes Sauber Seat

20 08 2009

The Formula One musical chairs has begun in ernest this week as we head into the second part of the season at the European Grand Prix.

For the new team Campos Cosworth, they are at the centre of rumours that they will announce their drivers at this weekend’s race.  This was quite a suprise for their principal Adrian Campos, but he admitted that the drivers would be announced “very soon” to Diario AS.

Meanwhile Radio Marca claims that McLaren test driver Pedro de La Rosa would be returning to a race seat with the team alongside Russian GP2 star Vitaly Petrov.

“I have a few more years of racing ability and would return to be with a team even that is not competitive.” De la Rosa told AS

Also on the musical chairs this week was the suprise announcement from Christian Klien that he would like a race seat with BMW Sauber for 2010.  Er, maybe he didn’t get the memo? Anyway we got the idea of what he meant, whatever the team name for 2010 he was committed to Hinwil.  He also claimed to have had offers this season but turned them down to support BMW.

With Alonso heading to Ferrari and Kubica to Renault, there would theoretically be one free seat.  there have also been claims from Germany that Nick Heidfeld could be off to premier touring car series DTM as BMW look to enter the series as they head out of F1 and WTCC.  Therefore 2 free seats at the team.

“There have been enquiries during this season,” said Klien. “The new teams are naturally interested in drivers with experience. But anyway this team (BMW Sauber) remains my first choice.

“With all the human capital and infrastructure at Hinwil I see no reason why we can’t build a successful car for 2010,” he added.

Klien, Baumgartner and Stoddart Do Their Bit For Bushfire Victims

24 03 2009

Christian Klien, Paul Stoddart and former F1 driver Zsolt Baumgartner have done their bit to help lift the spirits of those affected by the major Australian bushfires ahead of the first Grand Prix of the season.

Many people died in the blazes, some natural and some started by heartless arsonists.  Thousands have been left homeless.

Christian Klien demonstrated a BMW Sauber through the packed streets of Kinglake before Paul Stoddart allowed some of those affected the opportunity to have a passenger ride in his two seat Minardi F1 car, driven by Hungarian Zsolt Baumgartner.

Speaking about his experience afterwards, Klien said: “We saw on the news back in Europe what happened with the fires, and I flew there this morning by helicopter and you could see what happened to the land there.

“It was nice to bring the people up there a bit of happiness and to run our Formula 1 car there. You really could see the smiles on the faces of the kids, and it was a really nice thing to do.”

Klien Fastest In Bahrain

16 02 2009

Christian Klien was fastest one the first day of Bahrain testing this week.

The Austrian test driver took the BMW Sauber to the top of the timesheets, as all three drivers and teams took in well over 100 laps in better conditions than previously.

“Today was a very productive day,” said Klien. “We collected a lot of data and I even did a long run at the end of the session. Again we didn’t have a single technical problem, which is very encouraging.”

Kimi Raikkonen evaluated race set ups for Ferrari, and was happy with his progress.

Jarno Trulli completed some distance running in the TF109, completing over 2 race distances.

BMW Launch Their 2009 Car – The F1.09

20 01 2009

BMW Sauber have become the latest F1 team to launch their 2009 car, the F1.09 is the car the team are hoping will secure them at the front of the grid after a successful 2008 season.  Last season saw Robert Kubica (retained) win the Canadian Grand Prix.

The F1.09 is obviously different thanks to the swathes of regulation changes, but we can draw some big similarities and differences with other 2009 cars previously launched.

The car will be driven this season once again by Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica.

The frong wing looks wider than the rest despite its dimensions, probably down to those large proruding pieces on the top and bottom of the end plates.  It is also a three-plane style wing, with a large square nose similar to that of the R29.  The sidepods are very blocky and feature no aerodynamic pieces as stipulated in the rules, making this BMW look very different to all of the others and in some ways incredibly stark.

The car itself, finished in the traditional white/blue/red BMW Motorsport colours, shows real signs of the biting world economic crisis.  It has literally no sponsors.  Petronas Malaysia still are the front runner in terms of advertising space, and probably will stay with the team as they have been involved with Sauber since the original team days.  Intel now have much more space, and T-Systems are on the wings.  BMW’s other major backer, Credit Suisse pulled out of sponsorship earlier on in the week as reported on F1Fanatics.

“Developing a new Formula One car is always exciting, but this time there was something even more special about it. We really were starting from scratch,” said Willy Rampf, team technical director.

“First and foremost, the switch from grooved tyres to slicks means more grip, of course, but it also moves the balance of forces further forward: removing the grooves gives the front tyres proportionally a greater contact area and more grip than the rear tyres.

“Because the car differs so significantly from its predecessor, we already started work on the first concept studies in February – two months earlier than normal and before the F1.08 had even started its first race.

“Our aim. was to build a car with high aerodynamic efficiency and in so doing claw back as much of the downforce as possible, which the new regulations had taken away.”

Meanwhile speculation remains about whether the team will run the KERS system at the first event.

“KERS is still the most challenging  part of the new package to me,” said Dr Mario Theissen during the launch of the new car in Valencia.

“We are still not ready to race, but if I look at what progress we have made in last 12 months, it’s amazing. We have learned so much.

“We are still pushing hard. We are not ready yet. I am sure we will be ready at some point, I don’t know whether we will be ready for Melbourne.”

Monday 15th Testing Round-Up

15 12 2008

There were two test sessions taking place today, Monday 15th December 2008.

Jerez

Sebastien Buemi took the Red Bull to the top of the timesheets and continued a fantastic run in test form.  The chances are that he will be made a Scuderia Toro Rosso driver for next season.

He was involved in a crash but was uninjured.

BMW Sauber were 2nd and 4th, with Heidfeld (2nd) testing a B spec version of the 2008 car evaluating slick tyres and set-ups.  Christian Klien (4th) was racing with KERS fitted.

In 3rd place was Brendon Hartley, the New Zealander in his first public test with Red Bull Racing, put in a stellar effort and is sure to be one to watch for the future.

Nico Hulkenberg propped up the table in 5th despite completing 100 laps.

Driver Team Time Laps
Buemi Red Bull-Renault (B) 1.17.704 71
Heidfeld BMW-Sauber (B) 1.19.223 75
Hartley Red Bull-Renault (B) 1.19.586 95
Klien BMW-Sauber (B) 1.19.655 95
Hulkenberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1.20.704 100

Algarve

The new Algarve Circuit was officially tested on by F1 cars for the first time today with Ferrari and McLaren sending cars to the new track.

Strong winds hampered the first day, as did an illness for Felipe Massa.

Massa’s fastest time was a 1.32.926, but in truth with only a few laps completed it is hard to tell his true speed.

Gary Paffett was racing for McLaren, he had a 2009 front wing fitted and completed a fastest lap of 1.31.788.

Testing continues tomorrow.

Kubica Confident Of Big Wing Smashes In Australia

20 11 2008

Robert Kubica has delcared himself confident that in the first few corners of the Australian Grand Prix there is guaranteed to be plnety of carbon fibre flying in the air.

The new aerodynamic regulations have made the front wings much wider, but BMW Sauber have taken this to extremes and their front wing currently is wider than the tyres.  There is a good chance too that any front wing damage is going to cause punctures, so there could be a massive smash into turn 1 given the slick tyres.

“The front wing, it is too wide,” he is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport,

“I am curious to see how many (wings) will be flying at the first race in Australia,” Kubica added.

The BMW Sauber has rather questionable aesthetics, and after test driver Christian Klien commented that “it was the ugliest thing he had ever seen”, Robert Kubica joked;

“It looks better from inside the cockpit!”

Vettel Fastest On Final Day of Barca Test

20 11 2008

Sebastian Vettel was once again fastest on the final day of testing in Barcelona.

The young German was comfortably quickest ahead of Bourdais and Buemi in the Scuderia Toro Rosso’s.

Gary Paffett was 4th for McLaren, he had a KERS device onboard, as did Christian Klien who was 6th.

Jenson Button was high in 5th for Honda, Senna down in 8th completing his first test of an F1 car.

“Driving a Formula One car is really, really nice. And I was enjoying myself more and more each lap. Pushing harder and harder makes you find the edge and when the laptime comes from your effort that’s pretty good.” Senna commented after his test.

He added: “I’m happy. As I said, there was not a lot of pressure on me being matching Jenson or being super close to Jenson. They wanted to see what kind of information I could provide and if I was consistent and if I was quick on my own. I think I ticked all those boxes. I have to see how highly I have ticked those boxes but that’s all I could do in my first day.”

Badoer was 11th for Ferrari, but he was not speed testing, emerly testing the reliability of new products.

The Force India’s propped up the table.
