Vettel Smashes Opponents On First Day At Jerez
Sebastian Vettel blew everyone else into the dust today in the first day of testing at Jerez ahead of the new season which is under a month away.
The young German led the field on the first showing of all 2009 machinery.
He was 1.3 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, who had a minor excursion in the afternoon after spending his day working on set-ups.
Kamui Kobayashi was third in the Toyota, a solid day of testing from the young Japanese.
“This morning was my first real chance to try out the TF109 in dry conditions,” said the Japanese. “From the first run the car felt easy to drive so we were able to get straight into our programme of aero work. It certainly feels like a step forward from last year.
“The shower interrupted our afternoon but we still made it through our programme. Overall it went well so this was a good day of testing for us.”
Rosberg was 4th, followed by Kubica and Fisichella in the new Force India.
McLaren lagged well down the table, very far off the pace of the Ferrari, around 1.5 seconds away from their main rivals. Nelson Piquet Jr. propped up the table.
